Why Concetta Press Was Founded: Toward a Diamond Open Access Model of Scientific Publishing

Edward J. Ciaccio, PhD
Department of Medicine, Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York, NY, USA

Abstract After completing a carefully developed scientific study, one of the most difficult decisions is where to submit the manuscript. Increasingly, this involves substantial costs, complex journal submission systems, and prolonged timelines. Article processing charges for open access publication commonly range from $3,000 to $12,000, and access to published work is often restricted by paywalls. What if instead, publication were truly open access—with no cost to authors or readers? What if submission were straightforward, without complex portals or formatting constraints? What if peer review were constructive and efficient? What if accepted work could be typeset and published rapidly, while authors retain the copyright? With these goals in mind, we founded Concetta Press. All participants—editors, reviewers, and staff—contribute on a volunteer basis. Our aim is to create a publishing environment that prioritizes scientific quality and accessibility over financial barriers.
